Interview with Fouad Bachirou

in depth profile

Fouad Bachirou’s family come from the Comoros Islands which every well informed football fan will know is a group of tropical islands located between Madagascar and Mozambique on the Eastern coast of Africa. Fred is still working out how he ended up in Greenock!!

His parents moved to France and the young Fouad played for youth sides with his local team Cichy before moving to French Premier side, Paris St Germain. With them he played in a reserve side with competed in the French third division.

Fred, as he is affectionately known to Morton fans, is a small but highly combative midfielder who punches well above his size. His game is very reminiscent of Morgaro Gomis recently moved from Dundee United to Birmingham City, which is not surprising given their shared grounding in French football.

That Fouad learned his trade in a different school from most players in the SFL is apparent. As a midfielder he works hard on winning the ball and moving it on quickly with the simple pass which seldom goes astray. Although short in stature, he is well able to leap high enough to beat players several inches taller than him, a feat which leaves you wondering how he does it!

Fouad joined Morton during the close season prior to the start of the 2010/2011 season. Injury restricted his early season starts but he became a regualar in the team in the second half of the season. Overall he made 17 starts and 9 appearances off the bench. He impressed fans with his style of play and whole hearted approach.

After season 2010/2011, there was some doubt as to whether Fred would rejoin Morton and when news reached Greenock that he had re-signed for a further season most fans took that as being as good as any new signing.

We can only say - Bon chance Fouad et allez le ‘Ton!
