Interview with David McGregor
In depth profileLocal Greenock lad, Davie MacGregor, is the club’s longest serving player. He joined Morton as a youth in the late nineties and was part of a Morton youth team that ran Celtic very close in the Scottish Youth Cup at Parkhead .
He progressed to make his first team debut at the age of 18 in 1999. He was with Morton through the club’s darkest hours under the stewardship of former owner Hugh Scott and subsequent administration. At that time, he was made redundant but was re-signed on Douglas Rae’s takeover of the Club. Ignoring the brief period following administration, Davie has been with the club for almost 10 years. He has seen more ups and downs than any other player at the club from both a personal and the club’s point of view. He was a member of the team that was relegated to the third division for the only time in the club’s history following the extraordinary circumstances that prevailed in 2001. He was also a member of the team that bounced straight back up under Cowboy McCormack the following season. That success, however, was blighted as the following season David suffered a broken leg near the end of the season which kept him out of the team for the whole of 2004/2005. He returned to action and was a regular in the 2005/2006 side which finished second to rampant Gretna and then failed to win promotion via the play offs. He maintained his place in the promotion winning team the following season. He was, however, troubled by a recurring ankle injury which limited his appearances in our first season back in the first division but has since had successful corrective surgery. David's latest injury blow requires a him to go under the surgeon's knife once again for a hernia operation. Despite his injury problems, David has always remained upbeat and has been an extremely loyal servant to Morton and when on his game is a cultured and resourceful defender with a calm unhurried demeanour. He is naturally right footed but is sufficiently two footed to have, as often as not, played successfully at left back for the team.
