Interview with Peter Weatherson

in depth profile

Entering his ninth season with Morton, Peter Weatherson is approaching cult hero status with true fans of the club. His record speaks for itself and he is currently the club’s fifth top league scorer in the post war era. Under contract until May 2012, he will almost certainly move to fourth place and maybe even higher.

Peter started his professional career with a non league side, Newcastle Blue and was spotted at the age of nineteen by Queen of the South who surrounded him with three of their coaches, John Connelly, Iain Scott and Warren Pearson and whisked him off to Palmerston in 2000. He became a fixture in their team playing mainly as an attacking midfielder making 114 appearances and scoring 45 goals.

In the close season 2003, Morton paid £30,000 for Peter and he scored a hat trick in his competitive debut for us in a first round challenge cup match against Arbroath at Cappielow on 2 August 2003 which Morton won 4-3. That set the tone for Peter’s career with us and he became a fans favorite.

In 2008 he scored his 100th league goal in the SFL against his old club, Queen of the South. In October 2010, again against Queen of the South, his double gave him him his 100th and 101st goal in all competitions for Morton which include 85 league goals. To say he is thought of with mixed feelings in Dumfries may be a bit of an understatement!

Peter has been predominately a striker for Morton but he is a versatile player and ended up as club top scorer in season 2006/2007 playing at right back! In that role he has proven himself capable of getting forward and crossing and excellent ball!

Season 2010/2011 was to a certain extent blighted by in jury for Peter and he missed most of pre-season, a situation many footballers find difficult to recover. As this article is written at the start of season 2011/2012, Peter looks sharp and fit and has already bagged goals in pre-season.

Peter has made his home in Inverclyde and married a local girl. They have a daughter, Poppi who is the apple of her dad’s eye. When not playing football he enjoys his family and a game of snooker.
